Superfoods... What are they?

Updated: Aug 25, 2020

Superfoods are a class of the most potent, super-concentrated, and nutrient-rich foods on the planet.

Superfoods have the ability to tremendously increase the vital force and energy of one’s body and are the optimum choice for improving overall health – boosting the immune system, elevating serotonin production, enhancing sexuality, cleansing, lowering inflammation, and alkalising the body.

According to David Wolfe, in his book “Superfoods”, he shares his top 10 Superfoods and Tonic Herbs:

Top Ten Superfoods and Tonic Herbs:

1. CACAO (Raw Chocolate)

Cacao, the seed/nut of a fruit of an Amazonian tree, is one of the highest antioxidant foods on the planet – higher even than green tea and red wine. Unlike cocoa, cacao is a raw food and retains its enzymatic and vitamin content. Cacao is a great source of antioxidants (particularly flavonoids), magnesium, iron, manganese, and even fibre.

Raw chocolate improves cardiovascular health, supports strong bones, elevates your mood, and, as such a great source of antioxidants, may help to increase longevity.

2. GOJI BERRIES (Wolfberries)

Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 5,000 years, goji berries are highly regarded for their antiaging and anti-cancer benefits. Goji berries may also be useful for supporting both neurological and reproductive health.

Just one ounce of goji berries offers three grams of protein and is high in selenium, iron, riboflavin, and vitamin C.

3. MACA

A staple in the Peruvian Andes for thousands of years, this adaptogenic superfood increases energy, endurance, fertility, and libido. Dried maca powder may support cognitive function, protect from osteoporosis, and help reduce blood pressure. Maca is a good source of fibre and contains five times more protein than a potato.

4. HEMP PRODUCTS (Eaten in raw form)

Hemp seeds are packed with protein with each amino acid represented. They are also rich in iron, zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, and omega-3s. Hemp is a great food for growing children and adults looking to increase protein intake.

5. SPIRULINA AND AFA BLUE-GREEN ALGAE

Spirulina is the world’s highest vegetarian source of complete protein. Spirulina provides a vast array of minerals, trace elements, and phytonutrients. This superfood can help to improve blood sugar control, reduce blood pressure, and support a healthy cholesterol profile. AFA blue-green algae is a wild-grown superfood that contains blue pigmented phycocyanin, a powerful antioxidant. AFA blue-green algae may help to improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression. AFA blue-green algae may also be cardio-protective and help to reduce cholesterol.

6. BEE PRODUCTS (Honey, Pollen, and Propolis)

Bee pollen is a source of vitamin E, B vitamins, folic acid, and polyphenols. Bee pollen is thought to support immunity through improving the immune response, reducing inflammation, and acting as an antibacterial, anti-fungal compound.

Honey, in its organic/wild, raw, unfiltered states, is rich in minerals, antioxidants, and enzymes. As a prebiotic, honey may also help to support gut health. If you are looking for a nutritious sweetener, honey is a great option.

7. CAMU CAMU BERRY

Camu camu berry is one of the highest sources of vitamin C on the planet. It is also a great source of anthocyanins, a powerful antioxidant. This berry helps to reduce inflammation and decrease oxidative stress.

8. SEA VEGETABLES (Kelp, Dulse, Nori, etc.)

Rich in nutrients drawn in from the ocean and sun, sea vegetables offer iodine, magnesium, calcium, and potassium and are a good source of fiber, which helps promote digestive health. Sea vegetables may also help support immunity, reduce cholesterol, and decrease the risk of cancer. Sea vegetables are especially beneficial for the thyroid and hormone function.

9. MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS (Reishi, Chaga, etc.)

High in polysaccharides and immune-enhancing components, medicinal mushrooms are a highly adaptogenic superfood. They may also help to halt the formation of cancer cells and reduce symptoms of inflammatory diseases.
